Former Lover Is Still Mom to Kids

In a first of its kind ruling in the state of Montana, a judge has granted joint decision-making authority to a former lesbian couple, when it comes to raising their two adoptive children.

Barbara Maniaci and Michelle Kulstad lived together for 10 years before ending their relationship in 2006. In that time the two adopted a young boy and girl. Kulstad was not listed on the adoption papers do to laws denying equal rights to gay couples. The two raised the two children together.

Since ending their relationship, Maniaci married a man and wanted Kulstad’s rights to the children denied. But, according to the District Judge Ed McLean, “ To discriminate further against Ms. Kulstad because of her sexual preference in this day and age is not different than telling a person to go to the back of the bus because of her skin color.”

What do I think, although Montana voters rejected gay marriage by a 2-to-1 margin in 2004, I see a change coming!!! This is just the beginning in Montana. With each ruling in favor of gay rights and equality, we get closer and closer to a world where we won’t be judged based on the sex of the person whose hand we hold.

Also, it’s not a preference, but an orientation.
