AIDS Treatment Must Start Early On
A new study finds people who have the AIDS virus should start their drug treatments sooner rather than later. According to the new research, the current practice of delaying treatment until a patient’s T-cell (helper cells), which protect the immune system, count is below 350 is too late, and could lead to an earlier death.
Close to 56,000 Americans are newly infected with HIV each year. But they’re seeing a longer life span because of powerful drug cocktails designed to make HIV infection more manageable. But, there are some side effects: heart and cholesterol problems, diarrhea and nausea. Also, if a patient doesn’t stay on top of his treatments, his body can become resistant to the medication.
The new study finds patients who began treatment sooner, lived longer… by nearly 70% of the time.
