Wedding Bells Ring in Connecticut

Big news coming from the east coast, Justices of the Peace in the state of Connecticut are marrying gay couples starting today.

Earlier this month the Connecticut Supreme Court ruled we have the right to get married. This makes Connecticut only the third state, right behind Massachusetts and California, to decide its constitution demands equal rights to all citizens looking to wed.

“Interpreting our state constitutional provisions in accordance with firmly established equal protection principles leads inevitably to the conclusion that gay persons are entitled to marry the otherwise qualified same sex partner of their choice,” the ruling said.

But, we can’t get too excited, because the decision would only allow LGBT couples the state benefits of marriage. According to the Defense of Marriage Act, passed in 1996, we’re still denied federal recognition of state marriages, which provides for federal benefits… Social Security, taxation… etc.

We’re making some strides… can’t wait for more!
