How many times have you had one of your girlfriends say she needs to pick up a bottle of cranberry juice? Pretty sure we all know what that means… she sleeps around?!? No, seriously… she has a urinary tract infection (UTI). I was shocked to find out gay men are prone to UTIs too! Who knew?

We always hear how “bottoms” have a higher risk of contracting a STD from receiving anal sex. Well, this time, looks like “tops” may be asking for a sip of that juice. According to Dr. Frank Spinelli, “gay men are especially prone to UTI, particularly if they engage in unprotected sex.”

What’s the cause? What do you think?!? The cause of UTIs in gay men is bacteria usually found in feces. So, if you find it burns when you urinate, have a fever or lower pelvic pain… you may have a UTI. If there’s discharge… you have something else and should go see your doctor.

Dr. Spinelli advises gay men who do not use condoms for anal sex to urinate immediately following sex. “The act of urinating literally cleans out the pipes,” Dr. Spinelli says.
