The Senate is supporting a bill which promotes HIV testing for pregnant women. One Republican Senator, Dave Schultheis, of Colorado Springs, opposed the bill saying, “HIV stems mainly from sexual promiscuity, and unacceptable behavior.” He doesn’t think the state should protect people from the consequences of their actions. He related the testing to opening day car centers in high schools to serve teenage mothers.

“We do things constantly to try to remove the negative consequences of poor behavior, unacceptable behavior, quite frankly,” Schultheis told the Senate.

Democratic Senator, Jennifer Veiga, of Denver, is an openly gay woman and says she was offended by Schultheis’ remarks. She said they reinforced stereotypes about gay people being sexually promiscuous.
