Gay Doesn’t Matter for 2010 Census
Gay Doesn’t Matter for 2010 Census
Are gay people going to count when the numbers matter most? According to the upcoming 2010 census… don’t count on it. Census takers are going to mark down same-sex couples, even those legally married in Connecticut and Massachusetts as “unmarried partners.” Families headed up by two dads or moms are also being “officially” counted as single-parent households.
“This is all about the numbers. This is not about lifestyle or anything else,” says U.S. Census spokeswoman Cynthia Endo.
Looks like 2010 is out of the question for gay couples to “count,” but 2020 is still up for grabs. Can you be counted on to make a difference? You could help make us count by reaching out to your state representative and gay rights organizations.
