Little Boy Likes Pink & Barbies — Okay?

Photobucket

My little boy likes pink and plays with Barbies. Is this okay? I’m not a psychologist. I am a gay man. But, I’d say yes!!!

I recently had a conversation with a very good friend. One of her son’s playdates is a little boy by the name of Ethan. His room is covered in pink and toys often associated with little girls. His birthday cake was pink and looked like the cartoon character, Strawberry Shortcake.

Ethan’s parents think this is a phase. Little Ethan recently told my friend that My Little Pony is bad, and for babies. It seems someone told him he shouldn’t like the toy… probably because it is more “girly” than “manly.” My friend also says he is already starting to hide who he is. When all the kids are together in a group, he says he hates pink, even though she knows he loves it and would love to wear a pink polo shirt like her sons… he’s addicted to it, and asked where he could have his mom buy one.

His mom wants him to be “normal.” This breaks my heart. Little Ethan is growing up normal… a normal gay boy. Who says so? Me, the guy who dressed up like Wonder Woman and Cyndi Lauper. Even if a kid doesn’t grow out of “this” phase, he grows up to be who he is supposed to be!

Good News: Ethan’s dad is a man’s man and in the military. Sometimes Ethan asks his dad to braid Barbie’s hair. He does!

What do you think?

  1. Normal?! What’s not “normal” is forcing a child into a mold they aren’t shaped for, or making them feel bad or ashamed of who they are. That said, I can’t say I wouldn’t feel a twinge if this were my child–but ONLY because of the social ignorance and intolerance I know they would battle for it. Then I’d do whatever I could to support, bolster, and prepare them for a satisfying life–with or without popular consent.

And hooray for Ethan’s dad–now THAT is a true male hero!

  2. And by the way, I hope mom relents and realizes pink is the new black, and lets Ethan embrace the pink polo shirt look!
