Not Your Mother’s Prom Queen

What comes to mind when you think of a prom queen? Well, if you went to my high school, it was typically a popular girl with long flowing blond hair, curled just right to house the crown perfectly on top of her golden head. Booooooy, times are a changing… and so is the image of prom queen.

At California’s Fairfax High School, Sergio Garcia, a gay male student, beat out all the girls who once dreamed of being every boy and girls fantasy, homecoming queen. Damn, all those years of cheerleading and pep rallies for the golden girls down the drain for nothing.

Garcia admitted his campaign started out as a bit of a stunt, but after winning said, “I felt invincible.”

No he didn’t wear a dress, but he definitely showed his class and the country it doesn’t matter what you wear… if you’re a queen inside, it will show on the outside.

I congratulate all the forward thinkers in this LA County school for giving Garcia top honors. But, a side of me does wonder if it was really necessary? Why queen? Why not king? I wonder, wouldn’t it have made more of a statement if he chose to rival the jocks of his class, and ultimately have his classmates view and vote him as more of a man than the quarterback?

I’m a gay man. The important word there for me is, man. I don’t want to viewed as a woman. I have worked very hard to be taken seriously, and respected like my father. At times while growing up, I was called fairy, girly and a fag. I think an 18-year-old boy being elected prom queen just perpetuates this stereotype. I love hearing when a gay man wins prom king.

As for me… I won Christmas Court King. I wasn’t out of the closet yet, but for all those guys who wanted to dance with the Christmas Court Queen… well, they had to wait their turn until the King said it was time.

Long live the King!
