Swiping the Gay Card to the Top!

At least once in our lives, most of us have strived to be number one at something. The question most often asked about anything… Presidential campaigns, the Super Bowl and even Project Runway… who came in first place? I guess you can say it appears Americans are addicted to taking the top spot. But, lately it seems like coming in number two, leaves you second to none. Think about the two most recent famous #2’s… Adam Lambert and Carrie Prejean. Hell, I don’t even have to say who they are… you already know. Their names and faces have dominated the headlines and magazine covers for a couple weeks now. Seems to me… no one remembers #1.

But, what I find even more surprising than sticking to silver, rather than going for gold, is the one hot topic bumping these two people’s names up the marquee hierarchy… homosexuality. Think about it, what’s-her-face from god-knows-where actually won Miss USA. But, Carrie Prejean said she doesn’t believe in gay marriage, and the next thing you know she’s sitting across from Matt Lauer on the Today Show. She then became the unofficial poster princess of the National Organization for Marriage. She was the actual winner of that beauty pageant. This goes to show using the infamous “gay card” gets you into some of the fanciest parities… apparently, even if you’re not gay.

Prejean doesn’t believe in gay marriage, but she clearly believes in marrying herself to the topic to propel herself into the public eye. What’s worse, a man marrying a man he loves, or a woman who loves national attention so much she’s willing to talk about nothing else, but the very topic she finds morally wrong?

Then there’s that certain singing competition which made Adam Lambert a gay idol. In fact, if you read the recent headlines, such as Us Weekly, you see it in bold lettering… “I’m Gay.” There you have it, Lambert isn’t famous for his singing. He’s famous for his sexuality. All his talent was swept away by a couple references to homosexuality and finally admitting to being gay. Sure, he has more of a right to use the “gay card” than Prejean, considering he actually has sex with men, but his talents go much further than what happens between his sheets… or so I think.

I said it before, and I’ll say it again. America is addicted to sexuality, primarily homosexuality. There’s just something about two members of the same sex coming together as one, that helped transform these two #2’s into two #1’s.

I wonder who the next card carrying member or non-member of the gay community is going to be, who capitalizes off of our sexual orientation.
