New research finds the highest HIV infection rates in the United States are in the South. Although New York and California are also hot beds for the disease, high minority populations in the South help explain the finding. But, it looks like our northern neighbors are providing some hope for a potential HIV vaccine.

An HIV/AIDS vaccine developed in Canada has passed safety tests in animals and researchers are awaiting approval to begin human trials in the U.S.

Yong Kang, who has been working on the vaccine for 20 years says, “It is a very important milestone for us.” According to Kang, if all three trials are successful, we can potentially see a vaccine within the next decade.

A 2008 United Nations report on the global AIDS epidemic found 33 million people were living with HIV in 2007. Two million people died of causes related to the disease that year.

I love Canadians.
